Getting Started:
-
Review potential benefits to using our services [Home Page] and determine the estimated number of participants in your organization who might benefit from improved speech clarity in the workplace. Employees with varied first language backgrounds may join in on the same group class, since they are all simply learning a new Standard American English (SAE) "accent".
-
Call (316) 680.8611 or email us to schedule your no cost, no obligation initial consultation (conducted by phone or in person) to share your specific needs and learn how we might help you reach your workplace communication goals.
-
With our guidance, determine which class format, class size, scheduling, and cost structure best suits your organization's needs and objectives.
-
Next, we will begin pre-class speech screenings (for group classes), or formal, comprehensive individual speech evaluations (for 1:1 classes), analyze those results, and design appropriate course content for your participants. Materials will be chosen, then ordered, and a class start date will be agreed upon.
-
Class begins!
What to Expect:
STANDARD INTRODUCTORY INDIVIDUAL (1:1) CLASS
A comprehensive speech pronunciation evaluation by a licensed speech-language pathologist, assessing your current ability to detect differences in speech sounds, your use of SAE intonation, vowels, and consonants, and other significant areas of speech that contribute to speech clarity.
An individualized intonation and pronunciation program with content based on results of your initial testing and emphasis on applying newly learned skills in the workplace. Industry-specific vocabulary is incorporated, and detailed work on personal "problem words" or phrases will be included.
The undivided time and attention of the instructor, allowing for immediate and detailed feedback to facilitate maximum per session improvement.
Instructional materials, including workbook and audio CDs, and a small mirror to monitor mouth placement for speech sound production practice.
An after-class formal speech assessment to measure success.
[NOTE: Participant will need to provide and audio recorder (digital or cassette tape) for in class use. They will need to have access to a CD player to practice using audio CDs outside of class.]
STANDARD INTRODUCTORY SMALL GROUP CLASS (6 person)
-
12-week course, meets once per week, 1.5 hours per session, scheduled at your convenience
-
You will receive:
Informal speech pronunciation screenings at the start of class to determine priority areas of focus for the group. Semi-customized content will be included for the individuals within the group. (For those interested, comprehensive formal pre-class testing can be conducted for an additional fee).
Shared class time and semi-personalized attention from the instructor with ample, dynamic group learning opportunities. Many participants start as stangers or aquaintances and become friends!
Emphasis on industry-specific vocabulary, phrases, and expressions commonly used at work.
Instructional materials, including a small mirror, workbook, and audio CD's for home practice. This value-added return on your investment enhances outcomes, since practice opportunities are not limited to just "in-class time" with the instructor!
[Note: As with our individual courses, participants will need to provide an audio recording device, and will need access to a CD player for home practice.]
Following your Introductory Level I, 12-week class, you will be able to:
-
Discern the correct and incorrect pronunciation patterns of Standard American English (SAE) intonation, including proper syllable and word stress, vocal inflection changes, proper phrasing length, and appropriate speaking rate
-
Better recognize correct and incorrect pronunciation of frequently used SAE vowels and consonants
-
Improve your pronunciation of frequently used SAE consonants and vowels and intonation patterns for longer messages and conversation [Expect an average of 50% reduction in current pronunciation "distractions." Many clients achieve much higher improvements, based on personal effort].
-
Better understand, use and pronounce common expressions, acronyms, and vocabulary at work
-
Speak with appropriate loudness and rate of speech
-
Speak with greater confidence, knowing what to do differently to improve speech clarity at work
-
Reduce the need for speaking repetitions, and therefore frustration, while speaking in English at the workplace
